It was in 1793 when the French Consul of Thessaloniki Esprit-Marie Cousinéry visited Mademochoria.
According to what is written in the book entitled “A trip to Halkidiki in 1793” by Stefanos Kotsianos, the French visitor was really impressed by a wedding, was held in Arnea. He refers to it in a particularly illustrative and flattering way.
We will join this revival in Arnea today – after the holy liturgy. The bride is prepared and adorned with local songs – the “kliki” (local traditional bread) and traditional wedding delicacies being passed from guest to guest.
Further on, at the groom’s house the feast is greater: the groom is shaved and local songs are sung.
Colorful costumes of the Arnea Macedonian tradition can be seen everywhere.
The “psiki” (the group of relatives and friends) descends with instruments, music and dances.
The bride’s dowry is loaded onto horses and mules. The carpets and the calligraphic fabrics are rich. Handmade blankets, kilimia, bands, sheets, kofta, embroidered, silk, cotton – all are loaded and off to the new home.
The “psikia” (the groups of relatives and friends) meet. The mystery is done. The wedding feast begins!
You are all invited to our joy!
Let them live in health!
